Finally, I had a chance to continue on the project that I started a while back in 2014, that is the dance project. It is one if the projects I enjoy doing the most. This time we were doing the shoot in one of the old neighbourhoods of Bangkok which added some quirkiness and vibes to the photos.
The story of ink stone started in 2012 when we were searching for stone craftsmanship in China. China has a long tradition of using stone in various elements of the building so we are hoping to find an inspirational artist who is passionate and know their craft well.

I have not had a chance to do any environmental portrait since shooting Fay in Shanghai which was about a year ago. So I set myself a target to do at least a few sets this year while I’m back in London. Normally, I work with real people doing whatever they are passionate about and put them in a relevant context – whether it is dancing, art, sport or in this case cycling.

It’s been about 5 years since we last dived in Bali. Since then many things has happened. We moved to Shanghai then back and forth to Bangkok. Doesn’t matter how stable it is, when you live as an expat there is always a feeling uncertainty about your future. The call to pack up and move out is always in the back of your mind. Over three years in Shanghai, I have been collecting many ideas about shooting locations around the city. If I want somewhere that represent Shanghai, the obvious location would be along the Huangpu river with skyline of Pudong in it – after all the government decided to spend billion of Yuan turning the farmland across the river from historical bund into special economic zone full of clusters of skyscrapers as a form to say ‘Hey, look at this, here is the modern Shanghai’.

The morning we set to head down south, the sky opened up and it was chucking down with rain. Leaving the rainy Tokyo and the intensity of the city behind, we took the Hikari Shinkansen down south to Nagoya where we transit to local JR lines. The cloud disappeared within 15 minutes into the ride. The sky was dark blue and it’s going to be a great day hiking.
